Karrin has all the layers of an onion, with the bite of a hot chili pepper. At first glance, she's about as non-threatening as you can get -- just over five feet, blonde, and blue-eyed.
Once you actually meet her, that idea is immediately dispelled. She is a tough cookie, able to kick serious ass and unwilling to tolerate bullshit, necessary survival skills for a little woman fighting for acceptance in a "man's world. She does what she needs to get the job done, and doesn't care how it makes her look. She keeps her vulnerabilities -- the loneliness of two failed marriages, the bitterness of being unfairly demoted, the weakness that comes with simply being human -- tightly locked away, so that most of the time, only her closest friends can tell when she's hurting, and that's by reading in between the lines.
At one point, Karrin was given the opportunity to become the wielder of the Sword of Faith; that speaks to the core of her personality. It goes beyond a simple belief in God, although she is a reasonably devout Catholic. She's a bulldog, willing to go to Hell (or the depths of Arctis Tor) and back for her friends. She is someone who honors her commitments and holds trust sacred, even rejecting the position as a Knight of the Cross because she had already made a commitment to the Chicago Police Department and the people of the city. And she inspires faith in others, earning the loyalty and admiration of those who worked beneath her in Special Investigations, though her superiors were less than impressed.
When Harry looked at her with his Sight, he saw an avenging angel filled with light and bearing a sword. In many ways, that's exactly what she is.
